Maintenance of roads in winter
The winter season starts no later than 1 November and ends no earlier than 31 April. Road maintenance is entirely dependent on weather conditions, both technologically and organisationally.
The condition of national roads is monitored at the Road Maintenance Management Centre in Kaunas district. Duty officers continuously monitor the state of Lithuania's road surface, meteorological forecasts and readings from existing weather stations, the movement and operation of road maintenance equipment on Lithuania's roads, and promptly transmit information to the responsible authorities about meteorological changes, accidents or other factors affecting driving conditions, ensuring more efficient management of road maintenance and better traffic conditions. The data is processed by the world's most advanced road maintenance software, developed by Swedish research company Klimator.
As it is not possible to clear and grit all maintained roads at the same time, the intensity of the roads is taken into account, as well as the 5 maintenance levels.
The focus is on highway roads with the highest traffic volumes. After ensuring optimal driving conditions on highway roads, national roads are gritted and cleaned. Only after the completion of the work on these sections is maintenance carried out on district roads.
